History is home to a number of research projects funded by organisations such as the Arts and Humanities Research Council and Wellcome Trust.

Featured project

Forms of Labour: Gender, Freedom and Experience of Work in the Preindustrial Economy

The FORMSofLABOUR project is funded by the European Research Council, and runs from September 2019 until August 2024. It uses archival records to construct a new history of work that includes women and children as well as adult men. The project has three strands, examining the experience of work via a database of work tasks; rethinking the major debates surround women’s work; and collecting new evidence about the freedom of wage labourers in the preindustrial economy.

The findings will be published in two books and a series articles in academic journals which will be available ‘open access’ or free of charge.
